U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) issued this statement following House passage of H.R.7910, the Protecting Our Kids Act, comprehensive gun reform and gun violence prevention legislation. The bill comes on the heels of mass shootings across the country, including at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY targeting the Black community and an elementary school in Uvalde, TX targeting innocent children. H.R.7910, which passed the House by a vote of 223-204, raises the purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21, cracks down on illegal gun trafficking, requires safe gun storage at home, and bans high-capacity magazines.

"I am tired of being told that nothing can be done about gun violence, while all across this country communities and families are torn apart," said Rep. Crist. "Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland, Pulse, Uvalde -- enough is enough! Tonight, the People's House took action to pass common-sense gun violence prevention legislation that is supported by a majority of the American people and, most importantly, will save lives. It is time for the Senate to do the same."
The Protecting Our Kids Act includes provisions to:

· Raise the purchasing age for certain semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21 years old.
· Crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchases to get illegal guns off our streets.
· Close the ghost gun loophole by making untraceable, build-it-yourself firearms illegal.
· Require safe firearm storage to keep guns out of the hands of minors and protect children.
· Outlaw bump stocks and high-capacity magazines that make mass shootings more deadly.
